Email lists on hai.org are supported by the Mailman software package. Generally, subscribers do not need to be aware of any of the details of using Mailman, as basic list actions (subscribe, unsubscribe) can be requested on these pages.
Mailman does offer a number of additional features, however, for subscribers willing to use the Mailman web interface directly. This page offers some tips for accessing these features.
One of the most commonly used features is the delivery option. You can turn mail delivery on and off for any Mailman list that you subscribe to without terminating your subscription. This and other Mailman options can be changed directly by the subscriber, and the change takes effect immediately. In other words, you don't have to wait for the list owner to get around to handling your request.
To change the delivery option or other Mailman options, start by going to the list info page for the list. This list info page is reached by entering into your web browser: http://www.hai.org/mailman/listinfo/ and adding the name of the list at the end. For example, http://www.hai.org/mailman/listinfo/norcal will take you to the list info page for the Norcal list.
Click on the 'unsubscribe or edit options' button. Scroll down if necessary to find this button.
To change your subscription, Mailman must verify that you are the valid subscriber, and that requires a password. If you don't know your password, click on 'remind' at the bottom of the page, and the password will be sent to your email address. When it arrives, return to this page and continue.
Enter your mail address and password in the respective boxes and submit.
This takes you to the options page, and the first option is mail delivery. Check the 'enabled' or 'disabled' box and submit to turn delivery on or off.
The page has a number of other useful features, including a button at the top to show you all of the lists on hai.org that you are subscribed to with this address. Other options are shown down the page. These include digest vs. regular delivery, and avoiding duplicate copies of a message when someone replies to you and to the list at the same time. All options have an explanation shown.
Also, when changing certain options, such as mail delivery, you can check the 'set globally' box and it will affect all lists on hai.org. Thus, if you are leaving on vacation and want to turn off all list mail, you can do it with one request.
