An Introduction to The
HAI –
What is an email list?:
Quite
simply, an email list makes it easy to stay in touch with a group of
people.
HAI Email lists:
The
purpose of HAI-sponsored email lists is to extend the HAI experience beyond the
physical borders of the Room of Love. Email lists are meant
as a way to build community, to support all HAI participants and to practise living the values expressed in the HAI Mission
Statement. It is the position of HAI that
all HAI-sponsored email lists should reflect the values taught in our work.
At
HAI Workshops we encourage various ways to communicate
from a place of love and respect. We ask
people to listen to each other with empathy.
We encourage integrity, support and understanding in all our
communications.
How do I subscribe?:
After
completing your Level 1 workshop, you will be subscribed
to the

Emails
received from the HAI UK email lists are confidential. We (HAI
If
you think that the confidentiality of any HAI UK email list has been compromised,
contact the email list manager immediately at: uk-announce-owner@hai.org
or the HAI UK producers at: uk-office@hai.org
How does it work:
There
are two lists available to you. The
first, UK-Forum, is for personal shares and discussions. The second, UK-Announce, is for all kinds of
announcements, advertisements, HAI related events, outings, requests, etc. You simply write an email using your normal
email program or web browser for those using Hotmail, Yahoo or other
services. You send this email to either:
uk-forum@hai.org or uk-announce@hai.org - This is known as
“posting” to the list. Your email will then be sent to all of the members of the particular
HAI
Responsible
communications:
What
is meant by ‘responsible communications’? Each email sent to any of the HAI UK email
lists should conform to the following guidelines:
-
Emails intended
for any of the HAI UK lists should only be sent to the
list and only that one list. The HAI UK lists are confidential – only current
list members will receive the message you send.
-
Do not CC (carbon
copy) or BCC (blind carbon copy) anyone else.
-
The HAI UK lists
are not to be used for unsolicited email of a
commercial nature (SPAM) – however, the UK-Announce list may be used to announce
gatherings, events or services of a general interest to HAI
-
Please do not
forward an email received from the HAI UK list to anyone.
-
Also, please do
not send a forwarded email from anyone to any of the HAI UK lists. This
includes virus warnings, jokes, chain letters, petitions and so forth.
-
When replying to
an email from the list, decide first whether you want to reply to the sender or
to the whole list. Please check the ‘To:’ box in your
email program or web browser for the correct address before you send your reply.
-
When replying to
the list, make sure you send your reply to either uk-forum@hai.org or uk-announce@hai.org and only
to that address. There is no need to CC
or BCC the original sender of the email, as they will receive a copy via the
email list.
-
It is also considered good email list etiquette to remove
(trim) the message to which you are responding if it is rather lengthy. Do not trim too much though. It is best if you can leave the relevant bits
in to provide some sort of continuity with your message.
-
Sometimes an
email that is received via the list can bring up
feelings or emotions. You are invited to share your experience of these on the
UK-Forum list. Remember to use ‘I’
statements.
-
Communication via
an email list can be challenging at times.
When restricted to just words, it is often difficult to
properly convey sarcasm, humor, irritation, etc. It is best to write plainly. Take care with how you state things – it is
much more difficult to clear up a simple misunderstanding on an email list than
in person. Consequently, if you should
read something to which you feel you must react instantly – wait – consider it
from many directions: did you read it correctly? Did the person writing it,
write it correctly? Did the message trigger some memory? Was
is really meant for you? Take the
time to reflect and find out why you feel so strongly about this.
-
Write what you
feel and if it is emotionally charged, wait – perhaps you will want to edit it
before sending it. If you reread your
response and think that it’s too much for the list or want to discuss it first,
you may contact the list manager at uk-announce-owner@hai.org
-
The HAI UK email
lists are not a place to discuss specifics of what happened in a workshop. The confidentiality of a workshop (even a one day workshop) remains with that workshop. Nor are these email lists a forum to air
personal conflicts with others. For
assistance with these issues, please contact the HAI UK email list manager.
-
All concerns
regarding email content or style may also be addressed to the HAI UK producers,
Priyatama or Bob, at uk-office@hai.org
How much email will I
receive?:
That
is difficult to say. The amount varies
depending on what is going on in the HAI community and to which list(s) you are
subscribed. Sometimes there are no
messages for a week and other times there can be several messages in one day.
If
you feel that you are receiving too much email from the HAI UK list(s) and
would still like to stay on the list, there is an option to receive the emails
as a digest or compilation of all the emails.
These digests are sent out whenever they have
accumulated a number of emails. This
will greatly reduce the amount of email received from the email list(s). However, it will delay messages from the list
getting to you. To change this option, contact
the HAI UK email list manager: uk-announce-owner@hai.org or go to the
following: http://www.hai.org/mailman/options/uk-announce and log in.
You may completely
unsubscribe from either UK-Forum or UK-Announce at any time by following the
same method in the paragraph above.
Sending files,
pictures, etc. with your emails or “Why isn’t my email getting sent out?”:
Do
not send pictures, web pages or other attachments to the list – they will not be accepted.
Also, make certain that your email program is sending out a ‘plain text’
or ‘text and HTML’ message. If your
email program is set to send out ‘HTML only’ message, then your message will not be sent out or, sometimes, it is sent out as a
blank). If you are having trouble
sending an email to the HAI UK email list, contact: uk-announce-owner@hai.org
Advertising:
* Commercial announcements are permitted
under the following guidelines:
Any
service, retail or wholesale product & marketable
skills (Discounts for HAI Workshoppers are
encouraged)
* Advertisements of any kind may only be
posted to uk-announce@hai.org
* Advertisements are limited to ONCE EVERY 6 MONTHS
* All
advertisements must have AD: at the start of the subject line
* The size of the ad must be less than 500 words
* A web site link (non-HTML) with
more information is strongly encouraged.
* A single short paragraph reminder
may be submitted within 7 days of the event.
* Thus,
if you're having 5 similar workshops over 6 months,
you can only advertise them once, and a website would be far more beneficial
than repeated postings.
Who is this ‘uk-announce-owner@hai.org’?:
HAI,
as an organization, could not exist without the many volunteers who perform the
various tasks necessary to support it. One
of these tasks is managing the HAI UK email lists and is
performed by Adam D’Auria. He has
been involved with HAI since 1993. Adam
has attended workshops in the
